FLIF uses a compression algorithm called MANIAC, which is a form of arithmetic coding. Jon Sneyers, one of the developers of FLIF, create a successor called Free Universal Image Format (FUIF), which itself was combined with PIK format to create JPEG XL. As a consequence, FLIF is no longer being developed.
